Gierst was waarschijnlijk de eerste graansoort die echt werd verbouwd. Het was al 12.000 jaar hoofdvoedsel voordat de rijst werd geintroduceerd. Vroeger werd het in een groot deel van zuid-Europa geteeld. Maar gierst werd teruggedrongen door mais, dat een grotere opbrengst per hectare heeft. Naast de overheerlijke bereidingen heeft gierst ook de prettige eigenschap vlug gaar te zijn. Kasha zijn geroosterde boekweitkorrels. Het eetbare zaad heeft een meel- en eiwitrijke inhoud. De vorm van het boekweitzaad komt sterk overeen met die van beukennootjes, al zijn ze beduidend kleiner, ongeveer 6 mm lang. De korrels zijn, indien geroosterd, donkerbruin van kleur. Indien alleen gedroogd zijn ze lichtgekleurd. Boekweitzaad heeft een enigszins nootachtige smaak, die door roosteren versterkt wordt. Veel graansoorten zijn onbekend en daarom onbemind. Vreemd voor een product waarmee we zo vertrouwd zijn en veelvuldig gebruiken. Over het mosterdzaadje, dat al duizenden jaren deel uitmaakt van het dagelijks leven - zelfs de bijbel heeft het erover - vind je nauwelijks enkele regels. Eeuwen geleden reeds beweerde de Griekse wijsgeer Pythagoras dat het eten van mosterd het geheugen zou vergroten, en ook later prezen meerdere wetenschappers, zoals Dodoens en Delobel, mosterd aan als een uitstekend middel om allerlei kwalen en ziekten te genezen. Op wereldvlak neemt het mosterdzaad qua hoeveelheid de eerste plaats in onder de kruiderijen. Dijon wordt over de hele wereld erkend als de hoofdstad van de mosterd. De benaming "Dijon-mosterd" is niet streekgebonden, maar duidt enkel op de wijze van produceren. De industrialisatie deed het aantal producenten flink slinken, maar meerdere (ambachtelijke) bedrijven bieden ons een gamma producten met een bont smakenpalet van zacht tot uiterst pikant. Misschien wil je die mosterd wel proeven. Bereidingen met vis, vlees en groenten krijgen door toevoeging van mosterd een meer subtiele smaak en een voller aroma. Naast een bloemlezing uit oude kookboeken en de klassieke keuken werden speciaal voor het boek tal van nieuwe gerechten gecreeerd waarin mosterd een wezenlijke functie heeft. Het boek zit boordevol ideeen waarmee je creatief aan de slag kan! Hoe iets klein toch groot kan zi jn, wordt weer eens bewezen in dit boeiende boek over de vele facetten van de mosterd en de vele originele recepten. Boek is als nieuw.‎

Invented by the late John Dicas, and for upwards of sixteen years, made only by his daughter and successor, Mary Arstall, late Mary Dicas, mathematical instrument maker, Liverpool: the only proprietor of the patent, who, for some time previous to the decease of her father, assisted in making the above instruments. The manufactory of the patent saccharometers, hydrometers, and lacto-meters, was for some time carried on by M. Arstall, under the firm of Dicas & Co.‎

‎First (only?) edition, 12, [1, list of instruments with prices], [1, blank]pp., recent paper wrappers. John Dicas was a scientific instrument maker, active in Liverpool, between 1774 and 1797. He was succeeded by his daughters Mary and Ann, who continued to operate the business until some time after 1837 when it was then taken over by Joseph Long. In 1780 John Dicas was awarded UK patent 1,259 for "constructing hydrometers with sliding-rules to ascertain spirit strength". (Hopp, 'Slide Rules. Their History, Models, and Makers'. 1999). A printed thirteen-line "Caution" on verso of the title-page warns against instruments on sale in London and Dublin stamped "Dicas" which are not of of her [Mary Arstall] manufacture. Not traced in Copac or OCLC.‎
