‎First edition - reissue of the first volume and first issue of volumes two and three - of the first French translation of one of the most important literary works ever written. ""Robinson Crusoe"" marks the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre and is widely recognized as the first English novel. Originally published in English in 1719, the work was seen through no less than four editions before the end of its first year and went on to become one of the most widely published books in history, spawning so many imitations, not only in literature but also in film, television and radio, that its name is used to define an entire genre - the Robinsonade. By the end of the 19th century, no book in the history of Western literature had more editions, spin-offs and translations than ""Robinson Crusoe"", with more than 700 alternative versions of it, the French translation being among the very first. It's influence in literature is almost unparalleled.‎

‎Rare edition of Lacroix's interesting book about the Man in the Iron Mask, which is a heavily discussed theme in French litterature. During the reign of Louis XIV, the mysterious man in the iron mask, the face of whom nobody saw, was kept prisoner in a number of jails, among these the Bastille, in the last half of the 17th century. According to Lacroix's theory, the Man in the Iron Mask was Nicolas Fouquet, who was imprisoned in Pignerol in 1665. Fouquet (1615-1680) was Viscount of Melon and Vaux, superintendant of finances to Louis XIV and protector of writers and artists, untill he fell in ill grace in 1661, was imprisoned and died under mysterious circumstances.Paul Lacroix (1807-1884) is renowned for his several important historical works and his numerous works of bibliographical contents, regarding which he can be said to have continued the tradition of Nodier. He wrote a number of historical novels, which were very popular at the time. They were reprinted numerous times, and were translated into several languages. Most of his works are published under pseudonym, because of which he is now best known under the name of ""Bibliophile Jacob"". Aged 28 he was awarded the cross of the ""Légion d'Honneur"" for his work on the history of the 16th century, and 1842 he founded ""L'Alliance des Arts"" together with M. Thoré. Apparently the first edition, which is quite scarce, appeared in Paris in 1836. Not in Carteret.‎

On page 129, the second word in the fourth line is heavely blocked out in ink and the word 'thoughts' is written in its place"" on page 144, the third word in the line three from the bottom is similarly blocked out and the name 'Holles' is written in. The other corrections are of less interest and importence but are also undoubtly author's corrections."" ‎Scarce first translation into French of Giordano Bruno's seminal ""Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast"", being the first part of any of Bruno's works to be translated into French and presumably the second translation of any of Bruno's works into any language, only preceded by the equally scarce first translation into English of the same work (1713). ""The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast"" constitutes one of Bruno's main works and that of his works which proved to be most influential throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, profoundly affecting both science, philosophy and religion, as it ""turns to social ethics and religious reform, but in a cosmic setting"". (Copenhaver & Schmitt, p. 301).Bruno's world-view as presented in the ""Spaccio"" cannot but have appealed directly to the French thinkers of the 18th century, when the first part of any of Bruno's works thus appears in French for the first time. The Enlightenment thinkers of 18th century France must have found much resonance with the extreme and provocative views held by the - until then - overlooked Renaissance thinker, who was burned on the stake due to his non-conformist views. ""Magic, pantheism, idolatory, demonolatory, apostasy - just these few outrages from the long list in the ""Spaccio"" would have been enough to anger the authorities, but there were more besides: Bruno doubted immortality, taught metempsychosis, recommended free-thinking, deserted positive for natural religion, criticized the Bible, defamed the Jews, slandered the Protestants, betrayed the Catholics, and condemned civil government besides."" (Copenhaver & Schmitt, p. 302). - Bruno's thoughts as expressed in the ""Spaccio"" doe not leave those of a Voltaire far behind.Bruno's works, the first editions of which are all of the utmost scarcity, were not reprinted in their time, and new editions of them did not begin appearing until the 19th century. For three centuries his works had been hidden away in libraries, where only few people had access to them. Thus, as important as his teachings were, thinkers of the ages to come were largely reliant on more or less reliable renderings and reproductions of his thoughts. The first translations of his works thus proved to be of seminal importance to the spreading of his ideas. As Jacobi states in the preface to the second edition of his ""Letters on Spinoza..."" (1785), ""This strange man was born, one knows not in which year, in Nola, in the Kingdom of Naples"" and died on February 17th 1600 in Rome on the stake. With great diligence Brucker has been gathering information on him, but in spite of that has only been able to deliver fragments [not in translation]. For a long time his works were, partly neglected due to their obscurity, partly not respected due to the prejudice against the new opinions and thoughts expressed in them, and partly loathed and suppressed due to the dangerous teachings they could contain. On these grounds, the current scarcity of his works is easily understood. Brucker could only get to see the work ""De Minimo"", La Croce only had the book ""De Immenso et Innumerabilibus"" in front of him, or at least he only provides excerpts from this [also not in translation], as Heumann does only from the ""Physical Theorems"" [also small fragments, not in translation]"" (pp. (VII)-VIII - own translation from the German). Bruno's most representative work, ""Spaccio de la bestia trionfante"" (The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast), published in an atmosphere of secrecy in 1584 and never referred to as anything but blasphemous for more than a century, was singled out by the church tribunal at the summation of his final trial. That is hardly surprising because the book is a daring indictment of the corruption of the social and religious institutions of his day. The ""triumphant beast"" signifies the reign of multifarious vices. Cast in the form of allegorical dialogues, Bruno's work presents the deliberations of the Greek gods who have assembled to banish from the heavens the constellations that remind them of their evil deeds. The crisis facing Jove, the aging father of the gods, is symbolic of the crisis in a Renaissance world profoundly disturbed by new religious, philosophical, and scientific ideas."" (From Arthur D. Imerti's 1964 translation of the work into English).""Bruno, who had already used geometric diagrams and philosophical terms to present n infinite universe, now wrote a dialogue in which he transformed the cosmos by transforming its imagery. He called it ""The Triumphant Beast"", a phrase that brought to mind the book of Revelation [...] Unlike most of his contemporaries, who gave the universe about six thousand years of existence since creation, the Nolan philosopher had already proclaimed that it was infinitely old"" in ""The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast"", he insists that the universe holds cultures and memories that have come and gone and will come and go again."" (Rowland, pp. 164-65).Giordano Bruno was born in Nola in Southern Italy in 1548, and entered the Dominical order in Naples at the age of 18. While pursuing theological studies, he also thoroughly studied the ancient philosophers and began doubting some of the teachings of the Catholic Church. When he was in Rome in 1576, these doubts became known to the authorities of his order, and an indictment for heresy was prepared against him. Before he could be arrested, he escaped and began a long journey which took him to many European countries, among these England, where his most important works are published, until in 1592 he was denounced to the Inquisition and arrested. In 1593 he was taken to Rome, imprisoned, and subjected to a 6 year long trial. He firmly refused to recant his philosophical opinions, and in 1600 he was condemned for heresy, sentenced to death, and burned alive. ""Bruno burned for philosophy"" he was killed for moral, physical, and metaphysical views that terrified and angered authorities."" ‎The Radical: An Autobiography. By the Author of ""The Member, ""The Ayrshire Legatees"", etc. etc. - [WHO IS JOHN GALT?]‎

‎The scarce first edition of one of the main works of John Galt, the first political novelist in the English language. Althought the name ""Gohn Galt"" is now primarily associated with the main character of Ayn Rand's modern political classic ""Atlas Shrugged"", the ""real"" John Galt (1779-1839) was one of the best known Scottish political and social novelists of the 19th century. Like Rand's John Galt, he too was an entrepeneur, greatly active in political and social issues. Because he was the first novelist to deal with issues of the industrial revolution, he has been called the first political novelist in the English language.""The Radical"" is a study of religion, politics and law in the local boroughs of Scotland during the transitional late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. As several of his other novels, it is concerned with the effects of change upon communities and upon the social institutions that shape those communities. The work is famous for its, prosaic studies, that are, however, far from dry, and Galt’s storytelling is known to be characterised by wit and humour.Together ""The Radical"" and ""The Member"" (also 1832) make up what John Galt himself calls ""the Reform"", as he states in his autobiography, ""they serve to illustrate, by the by, the sagicity of the trade, for they are thought to have too much a seeming of truth, and the sale of them has not been satisfactory. [...]The Radical [...] is deduced from principles and feelings coeval with human nature. It seems to me that the Radicals of our time forget that we are living in society for the benefitsof which we have surrendered a portion of our natural rights. The work in consequence turns on supposing, that what our natural feelings prompt must therefore be what we are entitled to do and to enjoy, forgetting altogether how much the social ties restrain the exercise of natural rights. But although some of my friends think the two works clever and philosophical, and although, on the Continent they have attracted more attantion than any other product of my pen, they have almost been still-born here. [...]."" (John Galt, The Literary Life and Miscellanies of John Galt, 1834, pp. 318-19). John Galt was born in Irvine as the son of a sea captain who traded with the West Indies. In 1789 the family moved to Greenock and much of Galt’s fiction draws from the localities of the west coast of Scotland where he spent his youth. John Galt was possessed of a pragmatic as well as an imaginative turn of mind. He had a keen interest in business and politics and always maintained that he regarded writing as a secondary profession. From 1796 - 1804 Galt worked as a junior justice clerk in Greenock before setting off for London on a sudden impulse of restless ambition. Here he studied political economy and commercial history and practise but failed to really make his mark on the business world despite several promising ventures.Around the age of twenty-four Galt began writing. He experimented in verse but was an inferior poet. Several of his essays, however, were published and this writing at this time demonstrates his early interest in politics and the colonies, particularly Canada which had long captured his imagination. In 1809 Galt spent a period of time travelling on the Mediterranean and it was here that he made his acquaintance with Lord Byron who was to become the subject of his acclaimed biography The Life of Byron in 1830. In 1811 he returned to London, his commercial aspirations disappointed and turned to journalism as a means of making money. At 34, he married the daughter of his literary patron, Alexander Tilloch. It was at this time too that Galt gained his experience of the workings of Parliament as a lobbyist for the Edinburgh-Glasgow canal. These experiences were to be formative in Galt’s later political career in Canada and were also to inform his later political novels, The Radical and The Member.Despite critical and commercial success, Galt had not abandoned his business aspirations. In 1824 Galt became actively involved in political campaigning on behalf of the Canadian colony and two years later left for Canada leaving the manuscript for The Last of the Lairds with his publisher. During the years 1827-29 Galt developed the virgin territories of the Canadian colony and founded the townships of Guelph and Goderich. For Galt, the Canadian project was the realisation of his most profound ambitions. But he was to fall foul of colonial bureaucracy and was eventually forced to return to Britain in 1829 under charges of debt and placed in prison.Having returned to Britain, John Galt began writing again, and in 1832 he produced two of his most famous works, ""The Radical"" and ""The Member"", for which he is primarily remembered today.‎
