[Kafka, Franz, writer (1883-1924)]. Busse, Ludwig.
Geist und Körper, Seele und Leib. Leipzig, Verlag der Dürr'schen Buchhandlung, 1903.
Large 8vo (162 x 232 mm). X, 488, (6) pp. Inscribed by Kafka and other friends to the philosopher Hugo Bergmann, Prague, 18 December 1905. Publisher's original cloth (a little rubbed, spine rebacked with original printed spine, hinges professionally restored). First edition. The title-page has a presentation inscription to the 21-year-old Hugo Bergmann on the day of his doctorate in philosophy: "Zur Erinnerung an unser gemeinschaftliches Streben" ("In memory of our common endeavours"). Written in the hand of the Prague intellectual Berta Fanta, the presentation is signed by her and six other members of their friendship circle: Bergmann's former classmate Franz Kafka, Dr. Max Lederer, Ida Freund, Oskar Pollak, his uncle Leopold Pollak, and Emil Utitz. - Berta Fanta (1865-1918) led a well-known Prague literary and philosophical salon, attended variously by Albert Einstein, Kafka, Brod, Bergmann (who was to marry Fanta's daughter Else), Rudolf Steiner and others. Ida Freund (1868-1931) was Fanta's sister. Like Bergmann, the jurist Max Lederer had been a student of the philosopher Anton Marty and shared the circle's interest in the philosophy of Franz Brentano. The art historian Oskar Pollak (1883-1915) had been succeeded by Kafka as rapporteur of the literary arts section Prague's Charles University in 1903. Kafka's classmate Emil Utitz (1883-1956) would defend his own PhD in 1906. He went on to teach philosophy and psychology at Rostock and later at Halle; after his deportation to Theresienstadt, he was head of the ghetto library. - The recipient Hugo Bergmann (1883-1975) had been a schoolfriend of Kafka's, and was close to Max Brod, whom he introduced to Zionism. Bergmann emigrated to Israel in 1920, where he was director of the Jewish National Library and a professor, and later dean, of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In his reminiscences of Kafka, published and reprinted in various journals from 1969 onward, Bergmann describes this presentation volume, adding that "a graphologist would undoubtedly signalize the fact that, while the others wrote their signatures in a column, one underneath the other, Kafka set his own name apart from the others, to one side" (cf. Bergmann 1972, p. 745). - The book forms the principal work of the German philosopher Busse, a classic of the turn-of-the-century discussion over the relationship of mind and body, when psychology was emancipating itself as a discipline independent from philosophy. The numerous pencil annotations in Bergmann's characteristic shorthand show that he read the volume closely. Kafka, Kritische Ausgabe: Briefe 1900-1912 (Frankfurt, 1999), p. 381. S. H. Bergmann, "Erinnerungen an Franz Kafka - Recollections of Franz Kafka - Kitay zikaron", in: Exhibition Franz Kafka 1883-1924. Catalogue (Jerusalem 1969), pp. 5-20/5-10, illustrated on p. 23. [Kafka, Franz]. - Janouch, Gustav, Schriftsteller (1903-1968) / Malraux, Clara, Schriftstellerin (1897-1982).
Dossier zu den "Gesprächen mit Kafka". Prag, 1947-1952.
I: Manuskript von Clara Malraux. 100 Bll., teils beidseitig beschrieben. 4to. - II: Typoskript. 74 Bll., einseitig beschrieben. 4to. - III: Typoskript "Gustav Janouch: Franz Kafka sagte … Erinnerungen und Aufzeichnungen". Prag, 1947. 182 einseitig beschr. Bll. 4to. - IV: Typoskript "Anmerkungen und Erläuterungen". Titel und 19 einseitig beschr. Bll. 4to. 6. III. 1950, 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt, 8vo; in tschechischer Sprache). - I + II: in gutem Zustand; III: fleckig und merklich lädiert infolge starker Inanspruchnahme (vgl. hierzu die erweiterte Ausgabe S. 14f.). I: Gespräche mit Kafka. Erinnerungen und Aufzeichnungen. Frankfurt a. M., S. Fischer, 1951 (EA). - II: Erweiterte Ausgabe. Ebd., 1968.

[Kafka, Franz]. Klopstock, Robert, thoracic surgeon (1899-1972), friend of Franz Kafka.
The posthumous papers of Robert Klopstock. Various places, 1890s-1970s.
A trove of 424 catalogued items, comprising correspondence including letters by Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Franz Werfel, and Salman Schocken; Klopstock's manuscripts and personal documents; more than 50 books from his library (among them inscribed copies by Max Brod, Klaus and Thomas Mann, and Franz Werfel), and a large collection of photographs. When Kafka died in the Austrian lung sanitarium of Kierling in 1924, it was (to employ the phrase used by Klaus Mann) in the arms of his friend Robert Klopstock, an Hungarian-born medical student with literary ambitions whom Kafka had met three years earlier at a different sanitarium, a fellow sufferer from tuberculosis. Klopstock's estate now makes accessible the largely unknown biography of the physician who was forced into emigration in 1938 and became a U.S. citizen in 1945. His manuscripts, his personal documents, his copious collection of photographs, the inscribed books in his library, as well as his correspondence with such eminent figures as Thomas Mann, Franz Werfel, Albert Einstein, Albert Schweitzer, and Salman Schocken now permit us to trace for the first time the path which the life of Kafka's last friend took. - Mann and Einstein both interceded on Klopstock's behalf to help him emigrate and find employment in the United States. In one of these letters, Mann directly invoked Klopstock's role as the selfless care-giver that would come to define his image in Kafka scholarship: "I first met Dr. Klopstock through the gifted young German writer Franz Kafka, for whom Dr. Klopstock did so much professionally and spiritually before he died". From Franz Werfel we have the now-famous 1934 letter in which he describes, in quasi-religious terms, his own relationship to Kafka, in whom he recognized (as he confides to Klopstock) the "Herald of the King". - Indeed, Klopstock himself was well-connected within German and Hungarian literary circles and active as a translator, especially of the humourous stories of Frigyes Karinthy, on which he consulted Kafka. Later increasingly private in his personal affairs and notoriously reticent about his famous companion, the physician was dubbed "crazy Dr. Klopstock" by Max Brod, who appears to have begrudged him his friendship with Kafka, viewing him, perhaps, as something of an interloper. Klopstock held and jealously guarded the Hungarian translation rights to Kafka's works; together with his wife Giselle, Klopstock undertook the first Hungarian translation of Kafka's "Trial", the beginning of which is preserved here. Giselle's own novel "Without Destination", set in a lung sanitarium, won the approval of Thomas Mann, who recommended it to Knopf, his American publisher. - Robert Klopstock died in New York in 1972, a highly respected surgeon and scientist whose research led to significant contributions in the field of pulmonary tuberculosis. His estate forms an extraordinary collection in which important discoveries still remain to be made. A PDF catalogue is available on request. Kafkas letzter Freund. Der Nachlaß Robert Klopstock (1899-1972). Wien, Inlibris, 2003.

8vo. (2), 214 pp. Modern marbled boards with printed spine label. Edges sprinkled. First edition. - A scholarly account, and partial German translation, of Ali Vasi Celebi's "Humayunnama" - a Turkish translation of the Persian "Anvar-i suhayli" (Light of Canopus), completed before 1543, which is in itself an adaptation of "Kalila wa Dimna", or the "Fables of Bidpai", a collection of animal fables with didactic overtones designed to illustrate wise conduct. - The oriental scholar H. F. Diez (1751-1817) had trained as a jurist but, bored by his administrative occupation, soon left the Prussian civil service and in 1784 went to Constantinople as Frederick the Great's chargé d'affaires at the Sublime Porte. He was ennobled after only two years of successful diplomatic service. Recalled in 1790 on the eve of the Russo-Turkish War, the self-confessed Turkophile soon retired to the life of an independent scholar and book collector in Berlin. His orientalist publications captured the attention of the learned world, and he moved in the circles of Goethe, Gleim, and Alexander von Humboldt, though largely outside the contemporary tradition of academic oriental studies. "Between his years in Constantinople and his death, Diez pursued his Orientalist studies with extraordinary energy. A string of books authored by Diez and mostly self-published appeared in 1811 [...] Even if many aspects of his scholarly life are almost forgotten, his merits, especially for the development of Turkish studies, are noteworthy [...] His works, almost completely printed at his own expense, reflect his interest in the origins of Asian cultures, literatures, and politics, as well as everyday issues and ethics" (J. Gonnella et al. [ed.], The Diez Albums [Leiden, 2017], p. 58, 76). - A fine copy, well-preserved throughout. Chauvin II, p. 49, no. 70. Ruppert 756. Goedeke VII, 589, 61, 1.
