COOK BERENGER Jean Pierre
Le Cook de la Jeunesse ou Extrait des voyages les plus récens dans les régions les plus éloignées
Paris: n.p. 1808. A little dusted and rubbed spines wearing; a very attractive set in unsophisticated condition. Two volumes duodecimo the three wide folding engraved plates after John Webber; uncut in the original orange paper wrappers. A very good copy of this charming and popular French account of various voyages for children. As the title suggests most of the material here is taken directly from the voyages of Captain Cook. The three fine and large folding engraved plates all after Webber respectively depict a Maori war canoe a walrus hunt and a Tahitian human sacrifice. There were a number of juvenile editions based on Jean-Pierre Bérenger's popular collections of voyage accounts which first appeared in 1780. Bérenger was a Swiss polymath; politically active he was exiled from Geneva and spent much of his adult life in Lausanne. He wrote several important books on geography and the voyages to the Pacific. This Paris publication largely devoted to the voyages of Cook has chapters describing Tahiti New Zealand Unalaska and the Sandwich Islands followed by an abridged life of the navigator. Forbes records two editions published in Avignon 370 & 495 in the Hawaiian National Bibliography but did not note this edition although the second volume includes a lengthy section some fifty pages devoted to Hawaii. n.p. unknown

COOK BERENGER Jean Pierre
Le Cook de la Jeunesse ou Extrait des voyages les plus récens dans les régions les plus éloignées
Paris: no publisher 1808. A little rubbed but a very good set. Two volumes duodecimo three folding engraved plates after John Webber charming early printed prize label to front endpapers; in original tree calf ornate gilt spines with black morocco labels. A beautiful set of this charming and popular French account of various voyages for children. As the title suggests much of the material here is taken directly from the voyages of Captain Cook. The three folding engraved plates all after Webber respectively depict a Maori war canoe a walrus hunt and a Tahitian human sacrifice. This Paris edition is largely devoted to the voyages of Cook and has chapters describing Tahiti New Zealand Unalaska and the Sandwich Islands followed by an abridged life of the navigator. Forbes notes that the second volume of this work includes a lengthy section some fifty pages devoted to Hawaii. Attractively for such a juvenile edition this set was awarded as a prize to one Mademoiselle Nathalie Guillemet in 1825 for her proficiency in the English language with the original printed prize label on the front endpaper. A second award from 1828 to Mlle. Guillemet is tipped in to the front of the second volume. No copy of this version is recorded by Forbes in Hawaiian National Bibliography though its existence is noted in the entries for two Avignon editions 370 & 495. no publisher unknown

In the three years since Beryl Cook's work was first revealed to the public she has risen from being regarded asan interesting phenomenon to occupying a niche of her own in modern British painting.Few artists have succeeded in appealing to the broadest cross-section of the public whilst receiving a critical acclaim any serious artist would envy.Beryl has been compared with Stanley Spencer Douanier Rousseau Rowlandson Hogarth Rubens Burra and even Chagallbut the range of these comparisons only servesto emphasise her striking individuality In this second volume of her paintings the mixture is evenricher than before. On a visit to Paris Beryl was inspired by the deft skill of waiters in a popular restaurant and also by the fetching appearance of two ladies who come and go in the Place Pigalle: both are here immortalised.Scenes in a well known pub in Chelsea where a fight broke out and in a gay disco engraved themselves on her mind and were swiftly transferred into oil on plywood.Pictures of Plymouth again feature prominently: the market Tescosa Bingo sessionlovers in the undergrowthdustbinmen and many othersforming a Chaucerian gallery of contemporary characters which captures the spirit of our age with humorous vivacity and unblinkered realism. Her 2nd book.
